Traditionally, TVA has supplied the South with affordable energy, some would argue that subsidies for coal make energy from coal too cheap. Meaning, the consumer's price for each kilowatt hour does not reflect the true cost of energy created by coal plants, the waste produced, and air quality issues. Cheap energy contributes to wasted energy. Just as when gas rose to over $4 a gallon people were much more conscious of their driving, if the cost of energy rises people will be more likely to conserve.
